What a classic picture book! I always think that story is king, and if you begin with a great story, then the art can only make that story better. Werner and Wolf have teamed up here and produced a gem. The power of this story, I think, is in the sympathy we feel for the main character - Little Mole. Who would stand for this? Nobody would. A cleverly crafted tale by Werner Holzwarth, and lllustrated by the late and great Wolf Erlbruch, this is easily one of my all-time favourite picture books. Wolf has drawn the tiny Mole with a big attitude to contrast his small size. And the humble coloured pencils, on some cut-out brown paper was all that the master needed to make this one sing (and of course immense skill).
