An underdog tailor in need, a benevolent team of mice and Simpkin the cat's change of heart. These are all the ingredients the go into making 'The Tailor of Gloucester' a true classic. Set this story in centuries old snowy Gloucester at Christmas time, and you have a very charming tale. Beatrix cleverly adds excitement by giving the story the Christmas Day deadline. And all that has been said before I have even mentioned how masterfully Beatrix illustrates this one. She has incredible technical ability, but it never takes away from the feeling of the images. Only upon further examination to you realise how well they are designed. She uses light as well as Rembrandt ever did, and her Gloucester streets scenes look like they could have been rendered by Turner himself. What a huge talent she was!
